I had a great time listening to music this year. I'd like to share the ten best songs I heard for the first time in 2008. If you can find these songs online somewhere I can't urge more sincerely to listen them.

In no particular order.

There are, according to the recently launched World Superhero Registry, more than 200 men and a few women who are willing to dress up as comic book heroes and patrol the urban streets in search of, if not super-villains, then pickpockets and bullies.

Amateur crimefighters are surging in the US

So here I am, listening to that old Icelandic so-and-so Björk, and figured I'd share some of my favorite comics a la internet every so often with you out there. Wherever the hell you are. So! Let's begin.

Bear & Kitten tells the story of two roommates, one a bear the other a kitten, who are anthropomorphic sometimes. It is also done by two things that are alive, those being people named Andy (writer) and Angie (artist) and they might even be going out. Don't quote me though.

Bear eats honey and has a brother with a mustache. Kitten likes Japanese food and bathes by licking herself.

This comic is weird and hilarious. Somehow being both lowbrow and witty simultaneously. In a single comic you might see a dick drawing and clever wordplay. Bear and Kitten uses real-world situations, crazy storylines (time travels, wild west shootouts, etc), animal mannerisms and general odd-ness to be funny. No punchlines here, because they aren't needed!

And the drawing is neat. Almost like a watercolor painting that was never finished.

A National Treasure.

Ladies and Gentleladies. Nicolas Cage is a one of my favorite actors. I now present an IMDB journey of a man who has brought hours of joy to my life.

Valley Girl (1983) - I still haven't seen this. (EDIT: 1/10/09 - I have now seen this. It's great. Legitimately.)

Raising Arizona (1987) - Remember when you were laughing WITH Nicolas Cage and not AT him? A great film from the Coens and a really touching, funny performance from Cage.

Wild At Heart (1990) - Holy Moley. This is a David Lynch movie...and Nicolas Cage is the star. Do I need to say more? I do? Ok. This might be my favorite Lynch movie. Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern are crazy in love and they go on a road trip. Willem Dafoe and Crispin Glover are in this. CRISPY!! Jeez, just watch it already.

Red Rock West (1992) - This is a severely overlooked "neo-noir" movie featuring awesomeness from both Cage AAAAND Mr. Dennis Hopper. A real gem.

Leaving Las Vegas (1995) - A FUCKING Academy Award-winning performance.

The Rock (1996) - Ok. Here's where things start getting interesting. It's a common thing for an actor to follow up on an Oscar by doing a bad action movie or a bad thriller. Now, I don't think the Rock is a terrible movie, but it does set the stage for the second half of his career. I would say this is the tipping point. Every move Nicolas Cage makes from here on out is "Post-The Rock".

Con Air (1997) - The Second Act of his "I'm now a viable action star" trilogy. Insane cast. I just recently saw this for the first time with James (my friend!). Totally enjoyable for the type of movie that it is.

Face/Off (1997) - Here is where we reach critical mass. Nicolas Cage has more money than he knows what to do with. He's been pushed to the brink of madness. I think it was all those fake explosions that knocked a screw loose in his brain. Regardless, Cage becomes insanely more fascinating to me from now on.

City of Angels (1998) - And now I have that Goo Goo Dolls song in my head...

8MM (1999) - I'm pretty sure this is a legit thriller, but I haven't seen it in a very long time.

Adaptation. (2002) - Nicolas Cage is DOUBLE-compelling in this already compelling film by Charlie Kaufman. How he got inolved in this is beyond me, but that's where Charlie Kaufman lives...beyond us.

National Treasure (2004) - The second best franchise in recent memory. Cage acts really cagey (double meaning!) in this. It's a bad flick, but in a good way. I can't quite put my finger on why I enjoy it so much. Aside from the fact that the dude acts totally bonkers the whole way through and it's always entertaining.

The Weather Man (2005) - Gore Verbinski is a great director and NC is rather charming in this.

The Wicker Man (2006) - Not to be confused with The Weather Man. Not at all.

Ghost Rider (2007) - One of the worst movies ever made. Nic's madness is palpable while viewing this. He drinks a martini full of jellybeans!

Next (2007) - Horrible movie. AARGH! So bad. Good wig though. AARGH! Great wig.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) - Remember how bat-shit he was in the first movie. Multiply that by tweleventeen.

I haven't seen Bangkok Dangerous yet, but I will be reporting on it and whatever else Nicolas Cage does from here on out. I love this man.

Dune

Now I don't know if you're me, but if you are me, this would have been pretty great if it actually happened. This is a picture of a sand-worm, inspired by the book Dune by Frank Herbert. It was created by H.R. Giger (one of my favorite artists) for Alejandro Jodorowsky (weirdo/surrealist director of the Holy Mountain and other films) because he was going to direct an adaptation of the book.

Jodorowsky began working in 1975 on an adaptation of Frank Herbert's Dune. The project was intended to involve his son Brontis Jodorowsky as Paul, Orson Welles as the Baron, Salvador Dalí as the Emperor, Mick Jagger as Feyd Rautha, Alain Delon as Duncan Idaho, Geraldine Chaplin as Lady Jessica, David Carradine as Duke Leto and Gloria Swanson as The Benne Geserit Reverend Mother. Dan O'Bannon for the script, Chris Foss, Pink Floyd, H. R. Giger and Jean Giraud (Mœbius). Ultimately, its funding evaporated, but Jodorowsky claimed it was sabotaged by the major studios in Hollywood because it was too French, a strange claim considering that Jodorowsky, while a naturalized citizen of France, has never identified with any particular country or culture (although the funding and his producer, Jerome Seydoux, were French).

Do you see those names?! It would've ruled! Or at least made my brain melt.

Taken in 2001 on one of the hottest days recorded in Arizona history it was at this moment Michael Gross realized that nothing would stop him from telling the story of the graboids until they told him that he may rest. They had become his God and his Devil.

Tremors 5: The Thunder from Down Under (AKA Graboid Jack) is going into production. It is unclear whether Michael Gross is involved or not, but one thing is for sure: if he isn't stopped, there may be no hope for this series to ever reclaim its former glory.

If you see this man on the street- stop him. Do it for Victor Wong.

Hands up if the opening credits to the Showtime series DEXTER makes you hungry and jealous!

It took me a little while to get on the Dexter train, but I'm super glad I finally did. In case you're unfamiliar...Dexter is a forensic blood analyst for the Miami Police Department. Dexter is also a serial killer who only kills serial killers.

I am no supporter of violent vigilantism (aside from the Punisher and the Batman), but what I enjoy about this program is that isn't portrayed as a hero. The second season actually involves him using an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting to work through his "addiction".

Well, without rambling too much, Dexter is a fascinating television show that is only more involving because of its stellar cast and writing.

Has anyone had this type of frozen pizza before? It's the only one I'll eat, if I'm buying my own. If someone is cooking another type and offers some though, I'll probably partake. I dunno what it is about this square pie, but it's delicious. Put a few dollops of Frank's Red Hot sauce on it and you're in for a party. Anybody have any other favorites regarding frozen pizza?

RASL (pronounced 'rassle) is a really sweet comic book. It's only on issue three right now so it would be very easy to catch up. You should read it.

Rasl is this dude who...travels...through...dimensions(?). Yeah, I think that's right.

Anyways, it's by Jeff Smith, who is a fantastic artist and the story is REALLY well paced and interesting.

This is entirely true.
